Estratest Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Estrogens are produced by the body in greater amounts in females. They are necessary for normal sexual development of the female and for regulation of the menstrual cycle during the childbearing years. Estratest, a combination drug that contains esterified estrogen and methyltestosterone (an androgen). In 2000, Estratest was the 199 th top selling prescription drug in the United States , with sales of $110 million in 2001.

Estratest Dosage

  • Take Estratest cyclically a dose a day for 3 weeks, then no tablets for 1 week.
  • Take it as soon as you remember. However, if it almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Uses of Estratest

  • Estratest tablets suppress washing off, sweating, " hot flashes, " and vaginal an irritation, that trouble, with three quarters from all women, when they reach menopause.
  • Estratest works, replacing some of Estrogen, which is lost when the reproductive system is closed.
  • Although it relieves the physical symptoms of menopause, it won't help emotional symptoms such as depression if the physical symptoms are absent.

Side Effects of Estratest

  • Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
  • breakthrough bleeding and spotting
  • breast enlargement, tenderness, unusual discharge or milk production
  • chest pain
  • leg, arm or groin pain
  • nausea, vomiting
  • change in sexual desire
  • hair loss
  • unusual hair growth
  • weight gain
  • increased or decreased appetite
  • skin rash or brown spots on the face
  • tiredness

Warnings and precautions before taking Estratest:

  • It is not yet known whether the use of estrogen increases the risk of breast cancer in women. Therefore, it is very important that you regularly check your breasts for any unusual lumps or discharge.
  • You should also have a mammogram done if your doctor recommends it.
  • This medicine may affect blood sugar levels. If you notice a change in the results of your blood or urine sugar tests or if you have any questions, check with your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

  • If Estratest is taken with certain other drugs, their effects may be altered.
  • It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Estratest with the following:
    • Blood thinners such as Coumadin
    • Insulin
Overdose

Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Estratest overdose include:

  • Nausea
  • Vaginal bleeding
