Esmolol Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Esmolol is a beta 1-selective (cardioselective) adrenergic receptor blocking agent. Esmolol is used for the rapid control of ventricular rate. Esmolol may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Esmolol decreases the force and rate of heart contractions by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors of the sympathetic nervous system, which are found in the heart, lungs and other organs of the body.

Esmolol Dosage

• The common doses for male, female and children is depend on there wait. You should be taken esmolol with or without food.

Uses of Esmolol

• It is use for the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial fibrillation/flutter (control ventricular rate); treatment of tachycardia and/or hypertension (especially intraoperative or postoperative); treatment of noncompensatory sinus tachycardia.

Side Effects of Esmolol

• All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects.
• Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome: Agitation; confusion; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; nausea; sleepiness. Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); change in skin color; chest pain; fainting; headache; mental/mood changes; pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site; seizures; sweating; unusually slow or irregular heartbeat.

Warnings and precautions before taking Esmolol:

• If you have angina or have had heart problems, do not suddenly stop using this medication without first consulting your doctor.
• If your doctor decides you should no longer use this medication, you must stop this medication gradually according to your doctor's instructions.
• Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Make sure your doctor knows if you have diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, asthma or breathing problems.

Overdose

Symptoms of Esmolol overdose are not known. But after taken Esmolol if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately.
