Muscle and Tendon InjuriesMuscles and their tendons, especially those in the leg, are often torn or stretched during vigorous sports and games. The muscles of the lower back may be strained after incorrectly lifting a heavy object, and those in the ankle may be damaged when footing is missed on stairs or on a slippery floor. SymptomsA severe sprain or strain causes a sudden acute pain and inability to use the affected area. If the ligaments are affected, swelling and bruising also occur. TreatmentThe affected part should be immobilized for a day or so, with an elasticated bandage in severe cases, and then gradually exercised back to normal use. Application of hot or cold compresses, and pain relievers, may help. If a tendon is actually severed surgery will be needed. |
